Organ donation week aims to raise awareness about the need for, and the benefits of, organ and tissue donation. South Africa needs more people to become organ and tissue donors- for instance, some patients wait, on average, seven to 10 years for a kidney transplant and many adults and children die waiting for a life-saving transplant. The Surgical Society started this initiative at UCT last year and it was a major success. There were talks on various aspects of organ and tissue donation. These talks were held at the UCT Health Science campus and Upper campus. This year we aim to also reach out to the community. There will be various talks and other events happening during the awareness week in September. More information will be posted on our website as the year progresses.
