Our first event for 2021 was a neurosurgery talk with the focus being on awake craniotomies. We were privileged to be able to hear from neurosurgeon, Dr Sally Rothemeyer and Speech-Language Therapist, Ms Nasreen Allie who are involved in the carrying out of these procedures at Groote Schuur Hospital. This was an interesting and insightful talk that portrayed the importance of a multi-disciplinary team in such complex, yet life-altering procedures.
Our second talk was focused on breast cancer awareness. It was hosted in June as it was Surg Soc’s breast awareness month. The talk entitled “Breast Cancer Surgery in the SA Context” was in collaboration with Project Flamingo, a non-profit company. The aim of this talk was to discuss surgical oncology as an effective public health intervention in SA whilst raising awareness of such a prevalent disease. We had the pleasure of hearing from Dr Francois Malherbe, Dr Liana Roodt and Dr Kyla Comins as they unpacked the surgical and psychological aspects related to a breast cancer diagnosis.
We have more exciting talks lined up for the year within various surgical disciplines. To find out more, visit our Instagram page!
